Main Drain Installation
Materials:
- The main drain for vinyl pools
- PVC glue, a hacksaw, shovel, tape measure, and silicone
- 1.5 inches schedule 40 PVC pipe. It should be an estimated 20 feet.
- A 1.5″ tee PVC fitting, a 1.5″ coupling, 3 1.5″ male threaded slip, 3 1.5″ elbows
- Duct tape, screwdriver, and utility blade
Process
- Trench digging: Measure in from the wall in three different locations so that you can know the pool’s centre. When you know where it is, dig a trench towards the pool skimmer’s right side. Ensure that you are not digging too deep because the pipe should be installed at nearly a superficial level.
- Preparation of the main drain: Put your silicon to use in the bottom of the threaded male slip and the threaded plug before gluing it to a pipe. Be sure to place duct tape around the main drain’s entire opening when the gasket at the bottom is lined up with screw holes. Using one layer of duct tape ensures that the drain’s inside and screw holes are completely covered.
- Setting the main drain: This simply involves placing the attached pipe and drain in place. At this point, you can use a tool such as a torpedo level to ensure that it is level then put back the earth around it.
- Connecting with the skimmer and pump: Next, find where your pool’s skimmer is located and plumb the PVC piping from there up to the pump. The process is not yet over; you still have to add the remaining valve to the same line such that there are two PVC lines and two valves heading to the front part of the pool. These two lines are then connected to the pump by piping.
- Cutting the main drain: This is, for most people, the most stressful part of the process. After getting the wrinkles away from the pool’s liner, you should start filling the pool with water. You will need a few inches of water, and this is when you will know where your pool’s main drain top part is.
Once the water is pressing down in the pool, you will get to see the main drain’s screwholes. It is at this point that the ring of the main drain and gasket and screw it down on the drain. Approximately ten screws should all be screwed through the liner.
When everything is in place, you should cut and remove the liner that is inside the ring. Finally, screw down the lid, and you will have successfully installed the main drain.
